Onions Africa is a social enterprise that operates Kenya’s first Digital Onion Farmers platform; created to support and empower Small Scale onion farmers become leaders in production of quality onions. We collaborate and partner with onion experts and professionals, who share and offer information, practical knowledge and farming skills needed by onion farmers from our online platforms.
We also support and help farmer’s to access certified extension service providers, affordable farm inputs and markets for sale of their farm produce. This gives onion farmers capacity to grow more acres and by extension leads to increased production of quality onions and better incomes for farmers.
Challenges Facing Onion Farming in Kenya
Rains or Excess Watering: Too much rains or excess watering can water log the crop.
If the rain in your area is too much, focus on growing the crop during the short rains.
You can also raise the beds to ensure the water flows out of the field.
Avoid excessive watering of your onions. The best type of irrigation on onions is drip irrigation, gun irrigation, flooding Overhead irrigation should be avoided as it causes fungal diseases.

How we operate
Onion Africa invites industry experts, experienced farmers technicians and researchers to create onion farming courses on the best and latest agricultural practices, techniques, pest and diseases in onion farmers. The content taught is practical and mostly recorded practically from onion farms so that the techniques being taught are demonstrated in the real onion farm environment. Onion Africa divides its courses into levels of difficulty, and users choose which ones to follow based on their skill set. Courses are cut into 10-minute clips, which means farmers can easily watch them in their spare time. The platform also organizes offline sessions where farmers can interact with lecturers face-to-face.
